2017 Europe Biotechnology Conference, 26-27 September, Dublin, Ireland

Education Programme

Track 1: Technology, Innovation, and Factory of the Future

Industry case studies will be presented to reflect the impact of megatrends in establishing new pharmaceutical plants for biologics manufacturing including:

  • Industry 4.0 and full automation, the complete replacement of human beings at shop floor level and a movement to higher qualified people for Production Control Strategies, Process Control, and Quality Oversight.
  • Product portfolios will change towards more biologicals, leaning towards biosimilars, personalised medicine, fusion proteins, ADCs and more.
  • Smaller batches and more complex product portfolios will apply even more pressure on the usage of single-use technology to avoid lengthy cleaning validation and cleaning processes.
  • Technology platforms level will see additional active substances like ADC (Antibody Drug Substances Conjugating) with higher toxicity, requiring full containment in manufacturing processes, and open product handling.
  • Continuous manufacturing playing a major role in reducing time to market by excluding scale-up processes and all related risks. The technology platforms used for biologicals upstream and downstream processes will specifically benefit.

Ireland as a market for biotech manufacturers will be discussed in a panel session at the close of these sessions. Hear from the Irish Government and take part in the discussion on how Brexit could influence the production landscape.

Track 2: Process Science, Knowledge Management and Regulatory

This track will focus on:

  • Enablers to new production control strategies like Data Science Workflows, diagnostic tools, and new ways to characterise extractables and leachables.
  • How quality management transforms and renovates in this new environment.
  • Capabilities, skill sets, and education needed to establish a workforce of the future.
  • Regulatory challenges for biologics production panel session.
