Education Conferences

ISPE Continuing Education

We welcome and encourage you to share your experience and expertise with fellow ISPE Members through the Continuing Education program of conference seminars and Annual Meeting.

Program development is a process, and the purpose of this page is to explain how conferences are developed, and to encourage you to participate as an attendee, speaker, program committee member, or leader.

Conference content is solicited from Members in a Call for Proposals in November of each year. The following definitions will help you understand the process. Please contact staff members for more information.

Annual Meeting

This annual event is held in North America in late October or early November each year.

  • Education sessions begin on a Sunday afternoon and continue through Wednesday afternoon
  • There are usually about 45 sessions, each 2.5 hours long
  • Topics for sessions are solicited immediately after one year’s Annual Meeting for the next in the Call for Proposal process described below

Conferences

ISPE conferences consist of a series of three or four concurrent seminars. ISPE seminars are on average two-days long and offer 12 hours of education time (or 1.2 CEUs).

  • Seminars are solicited in a formal Call for Proposal process described below
  • It is appropriate to launch a new technical document with a seminar

Call for Proposals

About 10 working days after one Annual Meeting will be the deadline for proposals for:

  • The next year’s Annual Meeting sessions
  • Conference seminars for two years hence, for example, topics for 2010 conferences are due by 10 November 2008 in order to allow for adequate program development
  • Proposers should plan on forming a Program Committee to develop content for both Annual Meeting sessions and certainly for conference seminars
  • Program Committees usually have between five and eight members and meet virtually
  • Content that falls in the realm of a Community of Practice (COP) will initiate an invitation for that COP to take part in the development of the session or seminar content

ISPE Education Committees

These committees are responsible for reviewing the results of the Call for Proposals and selecting topics for conferences and for Annual Meeting. They:

  • Oversee the quality and timely operational development of conferences and Annual Meeting
  • Liaise with Communities of Practice (COPs) for insight on topics of current interest and concern to Society Members

Leaders

Our leaders emerge from the Program Committee, actually attend the session or seminar, and emcee. They may also speak, but this is not a requirement.

Program Committees

These committees meet virtually to develop a seminar. Virtual meetings are supported by ISPE Continuing Education staff and include conference calls and web meetings. The Program Committees:

  • Review volunteer speaker database for potential speakers
  • Suggest speakers and verbally invite them to participate; ISPE staff issue formal agreements directly to speakers
  • Work with speakers for technical accuracy and to meet program development timelines
  • Participate in the Creative Brief process, write marketing material drafts, develop learning objectives and ensure speaker presentations meet those objectives.
  • Work with the Education Advisor on technical content and to maintain neutrality (non-commercialism)
  • Work with the Director of Continuing Education to employ high-quality adult education practices that encourage interaction among speakers and participants as well as participants and participants
  • Attend the leader/speaker briefing onsite at the start of the event
  • Leaders of the Program Committee attend, moderate and introduce speakers at the seminar
  • Meet program development schedules

Volunteer to Speak

Please download, complete and submit the Volunteer/Speaker Form. If selected, a member of the program committee will contact you.

  • You will be listed in a database which Program Committees can search
  • Please note: volunteers most often support their own travel and accommodations
Other Volunteer/Speaker expectations:
  • To produce a presentation between 30-75 minutes in length
  • To participate in the entire seminar in which you speak
  • To meet deadlines for your part of program development such as providing a presentation title, brief descriptions of the presentation, and final draft PowerPoint presentations about two months before the actual time of presentation, among other things
