University of Massachusetts Dartmouth - Biogen/Idec Tour, Cambridge, MA

Tour Biogen/Idec Cambridge by University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Students

On March 22nd the students of the UMASS Dartmouth ISPE Student Chapter had an opportunity to tour upsteam and down stream processing and purification. The Tour was hosted by Mary Wojtyk, arranged by Julie Boyle, and conducted by Samantha Richardson and Mike Hayes. A special thanks to them; they made this a great experience for the students.

The students got a first hand look at the process that is run in Bio 2 along with an opportunity for many of them to go through a gowning procedure. The students in attendance were Hassan Quadir; President, Tracy Brett; Vice President, Cornelius Weah; Secretary, Artur Yudzinsky; Treasurer, Ayesha Qadir: Student. The tour was also attended by Mark Sitcoske, President of the New England Chapter and Industry Advisor to UMASS D. After the tour ISPE hosted a lunch for our hosts and the students.

University of Massachusetts Student Chapter Kickoff, Dartmouth, MA

University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Formation Meeting

As kick off meetings go this one was rather special. Having been involved in a few so far, this was a very positive meeting. We have all 4 officers in place and membership of 8 students. With over 40 people in attendance the meeting was kicked off by Hassan Qadir, the president of the UMASS D Student Chapter by his introduction of Mark Sitcoske of High Purity New England, Inc., the President of the New England Chapter of ISPE.

Mark presented on the Biopharm/Pharma market in New England. He gave detailed examples of students who have progressed in their careers through their membership in ISPE. Mark was able to demonstrate his own growth from one industry to another and the effect ISPE has had on his own business and professional development.

In addition to students there were many professors in attendance. They also provided positive feedback on the presentation and on the development that is occurring in New England which will provide opportunity for internships and full time positions upon graduation.

Professor Brodeur, the Chapter Faculty Advisor was upbeat in her assessment of the activity to date of the students and their willingness to explore opportunities within our industry. Pizza was served, and the students enjoyed the presentation, which ended with the ISPE Video.
