What our members say

ISPE has advanced my career by teaching me how to interact with people. I realized that at ISPE events I can put myself in a position to talk with people that I don't know and doing so has unlocked a capability in me that I didn't have. Now I know people from all over the world and I can call them for advice whenever I need to.

Pfizer Case Study - Using a Balanced Scorecard to Drive Continuous Improvement

Recorded Date: September 2005
Course Type: Recorded On-line Seminar

Speaker:
Art Liem

Pfizer has implemented a new management system, called Pfizer Performance Scorecard, to drive continuous improvement within its Global Operations business unit. This management tool is based on the balanced scorecard developed by Dr. Robert Kaplan and David Norton. Although there is an obvious IT component to the system, this Recorded On-line Seminar will focus on the delivery of that implementation from a business change management perspective to embrace a continuous improvement culture. In the past two years, Pfizer Global Operations has transformed strategic objectives into measurable, tactical improvement intiatives that are at the heart of the enterprise, which spans four U.S. sites and one European site and touches more than 1,000 colleagues.

This Recorded On-line Seminar will discuss the background and theory behind the balanced scorecard, including what it is (a management tool to assist in data-driven monitoring to achieve strategic objectives) and what it is not (a bureaucratic, "numbers game" dashboard for punitive management actions). It will also cover Pfizer's implementation of the balanced scorecard theory as a case study on business change management rather than implementation of an IT tool. In addition, Pfizer subscribed to ANSI/PMI PMBOK as a project management standard to implement the scorecard.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this Recorded On-line Seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the background and theory behind the balanced scorecard
  • Describe the notion of a balanced perspective
  • Discuss the lessons learned and the recommendations for implementation of this theory

Who Should Attend

  • Senior executives, directors and managers of departments
  • Individuals interested in management tools that will assist in the delivery of strategic objectives, business change management, continuous improvement, and operational/analytical management systems.
