Terminator (of transcription)

A DNA sequence just downstream of the coding segment of a gene, which is recognized by RNA polymerase as a signal to stop synthesizing mRNA. In prokaryotes, terminators usually have an inverted repeat followed by a short stretch of Us at the very end of the transcribed portion. There may also be sequences beyond the transcribed part of the gene which influence the termination of transcription.
