How to Submit an Article
Have an idea for an article? Pharmaceutical Engineering welcomes the submission of articles pertaining to the pharmaceutical industry. Here's what you do:

Author Guidelines
A potential article for publication in Pharmaceutical Engineering should meet the following guidelines:
The article should be written for technical professionals on topics of special interest to those in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, and diagnostic industries. The editorial objective of Pharmaceutical Engineering is to provide practical application-related articles on timely subjects.
Commercialism in Pharmaceutical Engineering is strictly prohibited. Commercialism is deemed to be the inclusion of visual, written, or verbal references to any specific company and/or product for its promotion or commercial advantage. Articles that promote a specific product or company will not be accepted.
All articles are reviewed for technical content, quality, and relevance to our readership by members of the Editorial Review Board for Pharmaceutical Engineering. Potential articles must be submitted a minimum of FOUR MONTHS PRIOR to the proposed publication date. Due to the editorial "focus" approach applied to the magazine, some articles may be held for an appropriate issue; therefore, authors should be prepared to update material as necessary.
The International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) retains full editorial control of the contents of Pharmaceutical Engineering, and is authorized to revise and delete copy as appropriate.
Manuscripts are reviewed with the express understanding that they are not under consideration for publication elsewhere. The author is responsible for the accuracy and correctness of all statements contained in the manuscript (the publisher assumes no liability). Accepted manuscripts become the property of the publisher and may not be published elsewhere without the written permission of both the author and publisher.
Reprints of articles are available on a quotation basis.

Manuscript Submission Information
- Manuscripts must be submitted via ScholarOne Manuscripts: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ispe-pe.
- Once at the site:
- If you do not have a user account, to the right of the Log In box, click on Register here under New User? or Create Account in the upper right corner and complete the steps. You will see the message: “You have successfully created an account. You may now log in.” To continue right away, click on log in; otherwise close the window to continue later.
- If you have a user account, enter your ID and Password to log in.
- Once logged in, click on the Author Center link and follow the steps to submit your
manuscript. We ask that you upload FINAL manuscripts (no drafts will be accepted), along with all figures,
tables, biographies, headshots, etc., via the site. When necessary, you may submit information off-line (via
email), but this is not recommended.
NOTE:For complete instructions on how to submit a manuscript, click on the Instructions & Forms link located under Resources on the Welcome page (or Log In page – if not logged in). Open the following document: ScholarOne Manuscripts_Author Guide.
- The length of the manuscript should be between 3,000 and 5,000 words. (Currently, ISPE
is not accepting two-part articles).
- Please DO NOT number pages in the text. ScholarOne Manuscripts will do this for you when
it creates a PDF of your article.
- Please DO NOT include author contact/biography information within the manuscript.
Instead, we ask that you upload a separate document containing contact information (name, company, title,
address, phone, fax, e-mail address, etc.) for EACH author. (Note: This
is important as we will be mailing each author copies of the publication in which their article is to
appear.)
- A maximum of eight figures may be uploaded with each manuscript. Graphs, photographs,
charts, and drawings are all designated as figures. Please refer to your figures numerically: (Figure
1, Figure 2, etc.)
- Figures should be professional, high-quality files that meet the following criteria:
- 300 dpi (high-resolution suitable for printing). Files must be in .tif, .eps, .ai, .jpg or .bmp formats.
- We cannot accept digital figures created in CAD, Visio, or other drafting-type programs.
- All figures embedded in your document also must be uploaded (either individually or all together) in the aforementioned formats.
- Lettering on figures should be suitable for reduction.
- A maximum of eight tables may be uploaded with each manuscript. Please refer to your
tables alphabetically: (Table A, Table B, etc.)
- All figures and tables MUST have captions. Include a list of figures/tables and their

- Please refrain from the use of columns and/or excessive formatting; as your article will
be formatted per the style used in Pharmaceutical Engineering magazine.
- Dual units are required. Any reference to units should be in both Inch-Pound (IP) and the International
System of Units (SI).
- Select three-to-five single sentences from your article that you would like to see highlighted as
quotations (when space permits). Tip: Chose approximately one from every third page.
- A brief biography of each author MUST accompany the manuscript and be uploaded as an
individual document(s). The biographical sketch should be narrative in style and in chronological order.
Please include the following information: educational background, title and job affiliation, job
responsibilities, major areas of accomplishment, and industry associations or
affiliations.(Note: To save time, you may include all author biographies in one document
when uploading to ScholarOne Manuscripts).
- A professional headshot of each author must be uploaded as individual files (i.e., .jpg, .tif, etc.). The
headshot should be 2″x 3″ (minimum) and should have a resolution of at least 300dpi (high-resolution suitable
for printing). (Note: We cannot accept a headshot embedded in a Word document; we must
have the individual, digital photo/file).

References cited MUST include the following data: author(s), title, publication name, volume number, year published, and page numbers.

- References MUST be numbered in order of their appearance in the text. Please refrain from using the endnote/footnote feature. For example, at the end of the sentence, manually type the reference number in parentheses like this: (1).
Note: Beginning March 2009, your article will be removed from consideration in PE magazine six months past a missed deadline; i.e., the revision/final article submission deadline. You may resubmit the article at a later date; however, it will be considered a new submission.
