Michael O’Brien earned his Bachelor of Science from Ohio Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Case Western Reserve University in 1989 under the guidance of Prof. Anthony J. Pearson. In 1989 he joined Hercules Inc. in Wilmington DE, where as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in the Aerospace division, he investigated the use of organic materials for unique optical applications. In 1992 he joined Rhone-Poulenc Rorer / Aventis Pharma as a Research Scientist and in 1999 he became the US Head of Chemical Process Research. There he championed the use of automated parallel chemistry technologies as an integral tool in process research and development. In 2001 he joined Wyeth Research Chemical Development in Pearl River where he was the Assistant Vice President of the Synthesis Research & Development group overseeing Process Chemistry, the Chemical Engineering Technologies group and the high throughput process screening/optimization group. Michael joined Pfizer in April 2010 as the Head of the newly created Pfizer Pharm Sciences Technology & Strategic Sourcing group (TSS) that has since been re-chartered and renamed the Pharm Sciences Technology & Innovation group (PSTI) in order to better focus resources on technology, innovation, informatics and business development. Michael has a long history of leading technology innovation initiatives & its integration with traditional laboratory / plant operations. He has over 40 publications, presentations and patents.
