The Joseph X. Phillips Professional Achievement Award honors an ISPE Member who has made a significant contribution to the Industry. It is named in honor of Joe Phillips, longtime supporter of ISPE and a leader in establishing the Society as an “integrator” of industry and regulators.
The 2013 recipient is John C. Berridge, PhD, CChem, FRSC. Dr. Berridge, pictured with Dr. Charlotte Enghave Fruergaard, left and Damian Greene, right and, has been instrumental in ISPE’s strategic, regulatory relationship-building and in developing high-priority Society initiatives. His peers recognize his vast expertise, and he has been invaluable to ISPE as a Member, Volunteer, and Advisor for many years. Dr. Berridge has a gift for identifying opportunities to connect the right people to the right challenges, and has helped position ISPE as the leading voice on many industry issues.
The Richard B. Purdy Distinguished Achievement Award honors an ISPE Member who has made significant, long-term contributions to the Society. It is named after one of the Society’s founders and most accomplished Presidents.
The 2013 recipients are Winnie Cappucci and Stephen M. Tyler.
An industry professional with some four decades of service, Winnie Cappucci has been a major contributor to ISPE for many years.
Very active in GAMP, she has been a Steering Committee member at some level since 2004 and Chaired the GAMP CoP from 2010-2013. Winnie was a contributing author of GAMP Guides, as well as serving many times as a Special Interest Group leader and sponsor. Winnie has also been deeply involved in a wide range of ISPE educational initiatives, chairing or speaking at countless conferences in the US, Europe, Japan, and Brazil.
Steve Tyler serves quietly and tirelessly, often behind the scenes as a Member of many groups, Committees, and the Board of Directors He has had a significant impact on ISPE’s Membership and revenue streams through his support of PQLI programs and publications, including this year’s Annual Meeting and Regulatory Summit.
The Max Seales Yonker Member of the Year Award honors the ISPE Member who has made the most significant contribution to the Society during the past year. It is named in honor of a dynamic lady who contributed to the Society in many different ways and served as a source of inspiration during her battle with cancer.
The 2013 recipient is Jean-François Duliere. Jean Francois is the Chair of the France Affiliate Board of Directors, and he chairs the European Affiliate Council. As a volunteer leader, he has devoted hundreds of hours and countless travel days to ISPE and many in this year alone.
He has attended many European industry events as an ISPE ambassador, speaking and promoting ISPE to new audiences. As a Member of ISPE’s new Europe Forum, he plays an important role in helping to design the European Annual Conference in 2014, accepting the role of program chair in addition to his many other commitments to ISPE.
The Company of the Year Award recognizes the outstanding leadership and support provided by a company as reflected by significant active participation in the Society’s committees, COPs, programs and activities as well as its support of employee participation in ISPE.
ISPE’s 2013 Company of the Year is Johnson & Johnson. Johnson & Johnson, its companies, and employees demonstrate extraordinary support of ISPE – their leaders serve in volunteer roles including on the Board of Directors, Chapters, Committees, CoPs and key initiatives. Johnson & Johnson currently sponsors 149 active ISPE Members and these Members are some of ISPE’s most influential. The Committee of the Year Award honors one of ISPE’s committees, councils, task teams, and CoP Steering Committees for outstanding work done in support of fellow ISPE Members and the industry.
The 2013 Committee of the Year is the Drug Shortages Initiative Team. Team Member Steve Mahoney accepted the Award on behalf of Chair François Sallans and the entire Team.
The ISPE Drug Shortages Initiative represents a renewed effort by ISPE to lead significant industry issues that affect us all. In this effort, ISPE engaged teams of executives, companies and regulators around how ISPE could stimulate, understand and then motivate changes in tech transfer, manufacturing, quality systems, and regulatory and governance practices to mitigate shortages.
The survey and results received worldwide attention and was published in over 700 media reports including the Wall Street Journal. Their work has helped establish ISPE as the leader in the area of Drug Shortages and motivated the decision to run drug shortage workshops at every ISPE event in 2014, along with plans for further research in the findings.

The Affiliate and Chapter Excellence Award recognizes the outstanding work of the International Affiliates and Chapters as reflected by membership development and services, management, industry and society support, and innovation.
This Year, the Committee recognized two teams, the Pacific Northwest Chapter and ISPE China.
The Pacific Northwest Chapter, while relatively small in membership, effectively drives ISPE’s mission in their region and realized success in their effort to recruit and retain members. They are proactive in the development and delivery of programs, and support good stewards of the ISPE brand and standards, and they engage their membership not only locally, but Members around the world. ISPE China has realized a membership increase of more than 50% to a record 1,076 Members between December 2009 and August 2013.
In 2013 ISPE China launched a comprehensive website in Chinese, developed two world class conferences and many other significant events, organized a fourth Student Chapter, and engaged 65 regulatory Members from 16 different offices/branches of the Chinese regulatory community in ISPE.
Important meetings hosted in China provide ISPE with considerable brand exposure, supporting ISPE's mission in that important country and region. Charles Tong, ISPE China Chair, is pictured accepting the award.
The Roger F. Sherwood Article of the Year Award honors excellence in contributions to ISPE’s magazine, Pharmaceutical Engineering.
The 2013 recipients are Gordon Leichter, PhD, and John Spohn, CPIP for their article Automating a Manual Cleaning Program in a Multi-Product Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Operation published in the January/February 2013 issue.
The International Student Poster Competition Awards honor the top undergraduate and graduate student poster among finalists who won competitions earlier in the year and as selected by judges at the Annual Meeting.
