Tri-axial Electro-goniometer for Spinal Motion Justyna Zielinska, Stevens Institute of Technology

Abstract

Back pain affects about 80% of Americans at some point in their lives. For the 600,000 patients that undergo extensive surgery for a spinal deformity in the U.S., there are limited options for monitoring post operative progress. The Gold Standard of monitoring rehabilitation and recovery is to obtain x-rays, which results in about 2,250 mrem of radioactivity. The goniometer is designed to minimize such exposure and improve reliability of patients’ spinal motion parameters for the evaluation of surgical efficacy. The device is easy to use, requires minimal training, and encompasses patient comfort yet provides immediate results in an office setting.
