Securing the Supply Chain: Combating the evolving risks in pharmaceutical sourcing and manufacturing

Unprecedented regulatory actions such as the invocation of the Application Integrity Policy, a highly restrictive and cumbersome Consent Decree, successive import alerts etc. have highlighted the risks to the pharmaceutical supply chain, especially when sourcing API, intermediates, excipients from countries like India and China. Although we are beginning to see proactive measures in developed economies to avoid the supply of substandard and adulterated drugs, many pharma companies have not addressed these risks adequately. Using the prosecution of Ranbaxy Laboratories in the US as an example, Dinesh Thakur (formerly Ranbaxy’s Director & Global Head, Research Information & Portfolio Management, who reported the company’s failings to the US FDA) focuses on the need for an independent, third-party monitoring of the supply chain to ensure consistency in the quality of medicines supplied to all countries.

A shot in the arm: Coping with Change Fatigue in Pharma

At a time of continuing volatility and change, the industry is only part way through its journey to stability – and the cracks are starting to show.

Management are asking their organizations to undergo multiple transformation programs often back to back and not coordinated, while delivering portfolios to market against an ever more complicated external stakeholder environment.

The companies and individual leaders that identify and address the inevitable “change fatigue” will be much better equipped going forward.

Learning Objectives:

  • An overview of the most rigorous, analytical decomposition of how change fatigue actually manifests – what does it mean in practice.
  • McKinsey’s perspectives and cross-industry observations of what does and does not work.
